Welcome to another episode of the Meeting Leadership Podcast. My name is Gordon Shepherd and I want to say thanks for being here. Thanks for being a leader who wants to get some tips and take action. 01:03 –  Meeting Leadership Tip #6 – Make a concise point when it’s your turn to speak

Now, yesterday we covered items one to five from the checklist. So now let’s move on to item number six, which is this. I know how to make a great point when it’s my turn to speak. So many times in meetings, the talkers talk on and on. The quiet people don’t know when to say enough, but if you can use the word point itself as a handy acronym and teach that to your entire team, there’s a good chance that when it’s their turn to speak, they’ll be really concise and get things done. And now let’s move on to checklist item number seven. I understand how to find a mentor and I know how to make a mentoring relationship successful. And let me take a moment to support this from my own personal experience. Now, I have a business mentor and when we meet, it’s a really intense time because we’re very focused. He’s looking for ways to help me support my business and I’m there to listen to him. We’re not talking about cat videos or our families or that kind of thing. We really are getting into being very specific and he’s being objective, and I would say, quite firm, like he’s not taking any of my guff. So that mentoring relationship for me is super, super valuable and I can definitely say that it’s had a positive impact on my business overall. 02:47 – Meeting Leadership Tip #8 –  Set aside time to get to know yourself better

And now let’s move on to checklist item number eight, which is this. I will set aside the proper amount of time it will take to get to know myself better. Now, the big objection that I hear to this from many senior leaders is, “I don’t have time. I’m too busy, I’m swamped.” But think about it this way. What happens if you don’t get to know yourself better? What if you’re leading a meeting, you’re unaware of your behaviors that are putting people off and then you have to go unwind all the things that were bad outcomes from that meeting? I’m telling you, you have the time to get to know yourself. It will pay off in meetings, it will pay off in your personal life. It really is worthwhile.

03:26 – Meeting Leadership Tip #9 – Celebrate progress as you gain self-awareness

And after you start to get to know yourself better, then we get into a checklist item number nine, which is this. I will celebrate progress as I gain self-awareness. So often in our busy day we are just grinding and grinding and grinding and we’re just not taking a moment to step back, pat ourselves on the back and be proud of what we’ve done. I can’t say enough about authentically celebrating the small wins you make as you progress.

And finally, checklist item number 10. I will demonstrate that the new way I act during meetings is making my organization stronger. Now, think about it. You start to become more self-aware. You have a positive impact on your team. The meetings start to run at the highest possible level. Your meetings are more productive, they become more profitable, that has a strong impact on the entire organization, and I guarantee you when that occurs, the impact on your customers and your community will be at the highest possible level.
