Gordon Sheppard Speaking
Welcome to the Meeting Leadership Podcast. My name is Gordon Sheppard and I want to thank you so much for joining me today on the show. Because of you're here, it means that you are a professional who wants to up their leadership game and you know that you need to run highly effective meetings to do just that. And you also know that this podcast is going to give you the tips and the strategies you need to pull all that off.
00:52 - Why Meetings Waste Time - “That meeting should have been an email!”
And let me start today's episode by asking you this critical, perhaps aggravating question. Have you ever walked out of a meeting and said, "That meeting should have been an email"? When I speak at conferences and I ask this question to an audience, I always get a highly resounding, "yes!" Why is this happening? Why are meetings so often such a huge waste of time? Well, it's because so often we don't know why we are meeting. And, what are we going to do about it? Well, in today's episode, you're going to get the solution to absolutely make this stop. Now, here's how it goes.
01:29 - Know Why You’re Meeting - Learn how to connect your meetings to your strategy
Now I believe that you should be able to stop any meeting at any moment and connect that moment directly to your strategy. I believe this so passionately that I always say it twice, every time I say it out loud. I believe that you should be able to stop any meeting at any moment and connect that moment directly to your strategy. So, how can you do this? Well, find the vision statement from your strategic plan and say it out loud at the beginning of your next meeting. Then, have your meeting and at the end of the meeting reserve a few minutes to talk about whether or not the meeting that you just had moved that vision statement forward. And, if you just spent an hour talking about the gluten-free hot dog issue for the summer staff celebration ... and unfortunately I have been in that meeting ... then you are definitely not moving your organization's vision forward. But if you did, then you know it was a great meeting.
02:27 - Game Changing Concept - Grow your organization by connecting every meeting to your strategy
And can you imagine that if you said any part of your org strategy at the beginning of a meeting, had the meeting and you were starting to pull it off, what kind of momentum would you get into your organization? What kind of feeling would your team have when they knew why they were definitely in every meeting they were in, and if you went off track, you could say, "Wait a second. We're not moving our strategic objective forward right now. We can't be talking about this." This is a powerful, game-changing concept, and when you do it with every meeting at every level of your organization, you'll get massive momentum.
02:56 - Valuable Feedback Loop - Tell your boss if their strategy is working
And, if there are parts of your strat plan that are getting said out loud in meetings and people know they can't pull them off in every meeting, they can feed back to the senior leaders who are creating the strat plans and allow them to learn and know that their objectives are off. And they get that feedback loop which can be highly, highly valuable.
